President’s Report

I wish to report on a very successful year and thank all the committee for their dedication and hard work put into our 150th Show, which is one of our best shows ever. It was great to have an amazing 9,000 people attend the Show.

What a privilege to be nominated and receive “The Community Event of the Year” at this year’s Australia Day Awards.

We are pleased to announce Ray White Strathalbyn as our Major Sponsor and have once again partnered with the Southern Argus who is our Media Partner. We appreciate their support very much, plus all the other businesses and individuals who sponsor us.

It’s great to welcome Deb Petersen as our new Secretary and Ben Jackson as our new Treasurer, and welcome AOK Events who are on board looking after our trade exhibits.

We have a great Show planned again this year, and still have all our regular events like sideshow alley, a large array of stalls and lots of family entertainment.

Check out all the animals; the Cattle, Sheep, Alpacas and Poultry, plus the Horses at the Polo Grounds on Sunday.

A Big Thank You must go to our hard working Committee, all Volunteers, Sponsors, Exhibitors and Supporters for their contributions to make our show such a huge success.

Looking forward to seeing you at our 2023 Show.

Rex Liebelt
President

Our History

The Strathalbyn Agricultural Show Society turned 150 years young in 2020.

Chaired by Dr Rankine, the first Strathalbyn Show was held on March 5, 1856, adjacent to the Robin Hood Hotel.

1883
The Show Society purchased a 6 acre block of land, bordered by Commercial Road, Wallbank Street, West Terrace and Mill Street for 600 pounds.

1904
The Polo Grounds had been given to the community by Richard Smith for future use of the Agricultural Society. However, the preferred site was on Ashbourne Road, as it was closer to town.

1908
Special trains from Adelaide, Port Victor, Milang and Murray Bridge brought people to the Show. That year saw 203 light horse entries and 52 draught horse entries.  Strathalbyn was famous for its horses!

1909
Increasing stock numbers meant that the Showgrounds were becoming too small. Richard Carruthers offered 12 acres of his land between Ashbourne Road and Coronation Road to the Show Society.  The first show to be held on this site (the current site) was held on 21 October 1910.

1952
Log Chopping and Sheaf Tossing was introduced, attracting more than 130 entries, eclipsing the Royal Adelaide Show.
